How Life Coaching Changes Lives

Seeking direction, fulfillment or serenity in your life? A life coach can help.

Life coaching gives you the tools to create a strategy to move forward, gain more happiness, revive passion and set a course for your ideal life. Life coaching helps you stop making unconscious choices, repeating patterns of thinking or behavior that keep you down, and helps you see how to conquer obstacles, within yourself and in your life.

Have you ever been asked in a job interview, workshop or family conversation, “Where do you see yourself in five or 10 years?”

Most people struggle to answer this question. With the demands of daily life, family responsibilities, social activities and work, there’s not much focus on stepping back to take stock of your life, and determine where you really want to be. When you feel overwhelmed, like you are lacking direction or feeling disconnected to a meaningful purpose in your life, it’s time to contact a life coach.

Life coaching focuses on relationships, career, health, finance, spirituality, or any area that needs to be addressed to gain essential personal growth and life satisfaction. The coach asks helpful questions, supports motivation, boosts confidence and help plan which direction to take.

Most people already have some idea of how they really want to live and thrive, but their vision is unclear or they don’t know what steps to take to reach that goal. A big part of the process of coaching involves fine-tuning your vision, figuring out where you are and where you want to be – and how to close the gap in between. Coaches help you move the vision in your mind into a plan that will make it a reality.

Growing demand

There is a growing demand for life coaching, and their numbers have doubled in the past five years, according to the International Coach Federation Life coaching is the third most popular coaching specialty, after executive and leadership coaching. Women especially are seeking life coaching.

The typical life coaching client is 35 to 55 years old, and feels they have reached a crossroads where they need to make more effective decisions and no longer wish to make choices based on fear, doubt or lack of certainty.

Life coaching is not therapy. The coach may have a background in counseling, but the coaching process is different. A therapist helps you look back and heal the wounds from the past. A coach helps you be fully present and make conscious plans and choices to create the future. Coaching is all about moving forward.

Are you ready for coaching?

Not everyone is ready for coaching. Life coaching requires active participation, willingness to follow a plan to completion and taking responsibility for yourself as the director of everything that unfolds in your life. For those who need help with problems, a therapist is best. Coaches help people improve their lives.

In the coaching partnership, collaboration, other viewpoints and new perspectives are valued. Ask yourself whether you are ready to devote the time and the energy to making real changes. If the answer is yes, then coaching may be a beneficial way to grow, develop and realize your dreams.

Reasons for seeking coaching include:

  • Something urgent, compelling or exciting is at stake
  • There is a challenge or stretch to reach a goal or seize an opportunity
  • A gap exists in knowledge, skills, confidence or resources
  • A desire to accelerate results
  • A lack of clarity with choices to be made
  • Success has started to become problematic
  • Work and life are out of balance, creating unwanted consequences
  • Core values strengths need to be identified, along with how to best align with them and leverage them to create change

What are the benefits of coaching?

A 2014 Global Coaching Client Study conducted on behalf of the ICF found that of those individuals who had received coaching –

80% saw improved self-confidence
73% saw improved relationships
72% saw improved communication skills
70% saw improved work performance
61% saw improved business management
57% saw improved time management
51% saw improved team performance

And of those surveyed, 99% indicated that there were “somewhat or fully satisfied with their coaching experience” and 96% said they would do it again. The conscious, holistic, strength-based methods of coaching support people to create more rewarding, fulfilling lives and to find and achieve their dreams.

It takes a clear commitment of time and money to create a strategy, develop new plans and take action to reach your goals. Your coach will provide effective tools, techniques and resources to help you achieve whatever you set out to do.

You will be asked to enroll for a three-month minimum commitment. Based on your needs, you will meet 3 or 4 times each month with your coach for one-on-one coaching. You may have the opportunity to join coaching groups, appropriate to your interests and needs.

You will be able to reach your coach by email or phone in between appointments as needed to help you stay on track, adjust your plan or receive additional motivation. Coaching is available through online meetings or telephone conference calls so you will never miss a session and can attend your appointments at home or the office.

The fees for coaching vary according to services received, and range from $280 to $1500 or more per month. A coach is a powerful asset and ally who will partner with you as you determine how you want your coaching experience to unfold.

You will get out of the process as much as you put into it. Plan to hire a coach when you are ready to make changes and have the time to devote yourself to doing the work.
